I was talking to a patient today, and she was describing her experiences with her earlier IVF consultants. One of them told her - " Please don't be an American and ask so many questions ! Just leave everything upto me and I'll take care of it for you !"
I thought this was an amazingly arrogant attitude. Since no doctor can ever predict what the outcome of an IVF cycle is, a good doctor will actually encourage questions to make sure patients understand all the biological variables involved , many of which can affect the success rates.
I always tell patients that the outcome of an IVF cycle is always uncertain, no matter how hard I work or how good a doctor I am. This is why they should be actively involved in the treatment process, so they have confidence in their doctor; and peace of mind they did their best.
