We were a couple aged 33 and 34 when we heard about Dr Malpani from a friend. We'd been married for 8 years and had been actively trying to conceive for more than 4 years. We'd seen umpteen doctors, had both undergone surgeries and tried different types of medications - Allopathy, Ayurveda etc. I had a fibroid which had grown over the years that eventually needed to be removed through surgery. My AMH (ovarian reserve indicator hormone) deteriorated after i crossed 32. My husband had Oligoasthenoteratospermia and grade 2 vericocele for which he underwent a minor surgery (even though it was not mandatory). Over the years, we met with many gynaecologists, urologists and eventually fertility specialists. (Important advice - if you have difficulty conceiving, it is important to meet a good fertility specialist and not just a gynaecologist or urologist. We lost valuable time because we learnt this the hard way)
We conceived naturally once, but it was not a viable pregnancy and there was no foetal heartbeat even at 8 weeks. We did an MTP at 9 weeks and continued trying to conceive for another year. Since we were unable to, we decided to go ahead with an IVF/ICSI given our age and fertility profiles.
We were scouting for an good doctor when we heard about Dr Aniruddha and Anjali Malpani from a friend. His brother and wife had successfully underwent an assisted pregnancy at the Malpani clinic and they now have toddler twins. I read about Dr. Malpani in detail and checked out their website. We corresponded with Dr. Malpani through email initially and sent him all our medical history. Dr. immediately prescribed medicines and supplements for my low AMH and vitamin D. I started on them and then flew down to Mumbai at a convenient time for a personal consultation (though he did not think it was necessary as he already had all the required reports). We liked the hand outs and brochures and the vision of the Malpanis as was clear from their content. Dr Malpani is one of the few open minded doctors that I have met, in India, who encourages his patients to be well read about their problems. They have even set up a free medical library in Mumbai. He believes in patient enabling by urging us to read credible online medical sites and books. He is very open to a healthy discussion and questions about the mode of treatment, medications etc.
We decided on a tentative date to start the treatment (two months from then) and he prescribed the detailed plan, medications, dosage etc. In the meantime, we took the supplements, did Yoga and underwent a course of Acupuncture treatment (at Sama Wellness Clinic in Bangalore) for enhancing fertility, as recommended by Dr. The treatment plan did not require us to be at the clinic for the first 10 days of my cycle and I continued to work during this time. We travelled to Mumbai on the 10th day and continued with the treatment (you'll find other details and timelines on their website). We stayed close to the clinic in Colaba and went to the clinic as and when required for the procedures. We flew back to our hometown 3 days after the embryos were transferred. By the grace of God and thanks to the Malpani team, we conceived successfully that cycle.
There are many things that increased my trust and admiration for the Doctors at Malpani:
1. Doctor was patient and tolerant of all our little anxieties. He was open to discussion and encouraged us to read about all aspects of our problems, medications, treatment etc.
2. Both before, during and after our treatment, Dr Malpani and Dr Sai (embryologist) promptly responded to all our queries on email.
3. Dr was very well-read and upto date in his field.
4. All instructions by the nurses and staff were clear, precise and the clinic is run in an organised and professional manner.
We are forever grateful to the Malpani clinic and staff for helping us have a hassle free and successful ART on our first attempt.
