Why do some doctors insist on doing a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy before an IVF treatment ?

Many IVF patients are advised to do a hysteroscopy and/or a laparoscopy before starting IVF treatment.

Now, this makes a lot of sense for the doctor because they can charge for every surgical procedure - and the more the procedures they do, the more the money they make. But the reality is that most of these operations are completely uncalled for, and they need to be used very selectively. Thus, it may make sense to do a hysteroscopy in case the ultrasound shows that you have a polyp, but if your vaginal ultrasound scan shows your endometrium is normal, then there's no justification to subjecting you to this surgery.

Yes, the doctor will claim it's a "minor procedure", but for a patient, every procedure is major. And remember that nothing in life is risk-free !

And definitely don't do let the doctor do a laparoscopy , because there's nothing in a laparoscopy which will change the IVF treatment plan. Yes, some doctors will clip a large hydrosalpinx if you have this, but again, this should not be done on a routine basis. And if your doctor insists that you have this surgery done before doing IVF for you, this is a red flag and you should find a better doctor.

What to find an IVF clinic which respects your time and intelligence ?
