Why Is the First IVF Cycle the Toughest?

Women are understandably greatly disappointed when their first IVF cycle is unsuccessful. Some of them even abandon the hope of ever having a baby after their first IVF cycle fails. This is truly tragic because the second IVF cycle is often much easier than the first.

Firstly, the patient knows exactly what awaits them and is well aware of the fact that IVF treatment does not involve any surgery or pain.

Secondly, because the patient now knows the doctor and the nurses more closely, their comfort level is raised.

Finally, what is most important is that patients have more realistic hopes from the second IVF cycle. Usually too many expectations are pinned on the first IVF cycle. Patients believe that because they have put in so much effort, time and money into it, god will surely know that they deserve success. They also overrate the ability of modern IVF technology to achieve success . Because their doctor is very hopeful or because their embryos are of grade A quality, patients feel that there is no way their IVF cycle can fail, since they have done everything perfectly.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way. Most IVF cycles fail due to factors well beyond the control of the physician or the patient.  Getting pregnant, whether naturally or with the assistance of technology, remains a matter of chance.

Those who have faced IVF failures successfully have increased emotional strength. They are better equipped to deal with the turbulence involved in IVF treatment and therefore are more relaxed, no matter what the outcome is.

Not just for the patient, but the second IVF cycle is much easier for the doctor too.The doctor knows exactly how your body responds, and can tailor your treatment protocol accordingly.

    Hello Dr!

I just had my 1st IVF. Had beta checked today (9 days post embryo transfers) but HCG is only 12. Have been told I am likely miscarrying or ectopic. Have you seen any HCGs this low develop into a viable pregnancy?

    Thank you

  2. Was this a Day 3 or a Day 5

Unfortunately day 5 transfers- so I am aware HCG should be higher

  4. I agree such a low HCG is worrisome. Normally, 14 days after ovulation ( 9 DP D5 ET) it should be about 100 mIU/ml

Repeat the test in 2 days. If this is a healthy pregnancy, it should double

We look forward to helping you to have a baby !

  9. Good, this is encouraging

Once the HCG crosses 1000 mIU/ml, you need to do a vaginal ultrasound scan to confirm all is well
