WellPoint - investing in patient education

WellPoint - investing in patient education : "There are, however, many opportunities to improve efficiency in health care. WellPoint plays a key role in this effort, from the way we operate our business to initiatives that profoundly impact the industry. For example, our data show that member participation in health improvement programs for chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease improves clinical outcomes and quality of life while reducing costs. For WellPoint members participating for three years in the Company's diabetes program, average emergency room visits dropped 27 percent and average blood sugar levels decreased 15 percent during the three-year participation period."
The patients benefitted - and so did their employers ! Why doesn't everyone understand that patient education is very cost effective ? Why do we depend upon doctors to do this ? Why can't corporates take the initiative and invest in this ?
